I've always been a game designer. Even before I knew what game design was, I was coming up with monsters and weapon stats. I've never found another calling, because games are unique. They're not passive like other media. They're worlds that people get to enter and become a part of. They let us explore alternate versions of ourselves, and sometimes even uncover things we didn't know were within us. Tell me that isn't magic, isn't something worth devoting yourself to.
I went to Savannah College of Art & Design to earn a bachelor's degree in Game Development. I interned at LucasArts for a summer. I led a team of students in collaboration with Microsoft. I worked with a four-person indie team for three years to release Disorder. I joined Bungie in the first year after Destiny released, working on what would become Destiny 2. I stayed with Bungie for over 11 years, through the final content release of Destiny 2.
Collaboration. I've been on teams of many sizes. I thrive on building things together with other passionate people.
Leading. I had the privilege of leading some diverse and world-class developers on various teams. I specialized in servant leadership (finding what my people need and providing it) and guiding through goals, empowering folks to work creatively without too much ambiguity.
Communication. I deeply understand the importance of keeping people aligned when working towards a common goal. I've built many skills in this area.
Broad design experience. I've worked on controls, sandbox, abilities, campaigns, missions, pursuits, economies, progressions, you name it.
Experiential Systems focus. Most of my career I've focused on planning and building out experiential player flow, and supporting systems.
Technical design. I quickly pick up new skills and take them as far as I need to. Often just for proving an idea. But I love the act of learning.
Outside of games and design, I have passion for the outdoors. Quiet places, miles from civilization, but always shared with friends. Then there's the stories and worlds that captivate me, immersing me and pulling me out of myself. Whether that's through books, tv, movies, or other forms, doesn't matter. I like writing stories and poetry myself, sometimes. Storytelling is a form of medicine. Not to mention music, and dance, and theater. Or tasty food, good wine (or bad, honestly), damn fine coffee, sweet treats. Really... anything that someone has put time and love and creativity into.
I think that's the key, for me. People are at their best when they come together. Sharing things. Doing things they couldn't do all on their own. Making things better, making themselves better. Making the world better. I like being part of that, through games or in other aspects of my life. And I want the games I make to contribute to the great tapestry of humanity, if only in some small way.
